Now let’s talk about the design of this intake a bit, because it’s a lot different than most intake systems you normally see on these cars. They actually went through a few different prototypes before solidifying this particular design. The initial prototype was just a straight venturi tube that fed into a large airbox which had two air feeds. You’d think that this would increase airflow because you have an additional snorkel with a larger airbox, but they actually didn’t see any gains from this and when they tested it with CFD analysis they saw that it was creating a lot of turbulence in front of the air filter.
They scrapped that design and decided to follow the same path as the OEM system that feeds towards one side, but obviously with a few big changes. The snorkel has been opened up with a bell mouth to increase and smooth out airflow, they’ve utilized a significantly larger air filter with sort of a hybrid round/cone filter design that directs the airflow towards the outer walls of the huge venturi inlet tube essentially creating a massive velocity stack. This is a 6 ¾” opening which I think is larger than any cone filter design that’s currently available for these cars. All of this results in improved throttle response and gains in performance that you can feel right away. Plus of course you get a big bump in induction noise as well.
