Journey To GT3: BRZ tS Mods - Round 2
- by Josh Kelley
Progression — derived from the Latin verb "progredi," meaning "to move forward" — is the current theme of this 2017+ Subaru BRZ Performance Package build. As the team at Driven.Media continues to develop this platform, every modification is a calculated step toward catching up to more elite performance machines like the Porsche GT3.
Recently, the BRZ was put to the test at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The team pushed both car and driver to their limits, revealing areas for improvement — most critically, engine oil temperature. Even with upgraded 5W-30 oil and overfilling, oil temps reached 270°F, a clear sign that a solution was needed.
Excessive heat breaks down oil viscosity, reducing its ability to protect engine components and causing dangerous drops in oil pressure. This can lead to engine failure — a non-negotiable risk for any serious track build.
Experience optimal engine performance with the Jackson Racing Track Engine Oil Cooler. This track and race-tested cooler features a thermostatic oil adapter and OEM heat exchanger, providing reliable cooling in extreme conditions for consistent performance. With a championship-proven design, it maintains oil temperatures below 250ºF and ensures proper oil warm-up for peak functioning.
Another issue revealed at Laguna Seca: the driver’s lack of seat stability. The solution? Schroth Rallye 3 ASM harnesses, compatible with OEM seats and DOT approved. These harnesses improve driving feel and reduce fatigue without requiring a full cage or race seats — ideal for a dual-purpose street/track build.
The team upgraded from OEM Brembo pads to CSG Spec CP pads, designed for dual-duty use. These high-temp pads perform consistently lap after lap, with a thermal ceiling of 700°C (usable up to 900°C) and low dust and noise characteristics. They deliver better fade resistance, improved pedal feel, and longer lifespan than factory pads — a perfect match for spirited street and serious track use.
The final mod in this round? A performance wheel and tire combo. Driven.Media selected Enkei TS-7 18x8.5 +45 wheels wrapped in Kumho Ecsta V730 225/40R18 tires. This setup marks a major shift in the car’s grip and responsiveness:
While not the lightest wheel setup available, the gains in grip and balance outweigh the modest weight trade-off. More lightweight options are planned for future updates.
